According to legend, a long time ago, a young and talented mechonguri (a player of a Georgian folk string instrument) named Mikeladze appeared in the palace of the king of Imereti. He brought the king an exquisite silver kula as a gift.
Enchanted by the gift beauty and the musician’s delightful voice, the king ordered Mikeladze to take his chonguri and travel throughout the Tskhenistskali landmarks.

Thereafter, he granted the young man all these lands and the title of nobility.
Nobleman Mikeladze settled in his new land, naming it Kulashi in memory of
this story.
Thanks to him, the first seven
Jewish families settled
in Kulashi. Over
the centuries, Jews
from all over Georgia
came to this settlement.
The community became
renowned for its
profound devotion
to the Lord,
extensive study
of the Tanakh,
and high level
of religious
education.
The village of
Kulashi is
popularly called
«Little
Jerusalem».
